Artist's Statement
Laura Wynne was born in 1957 in Pasadena, CA, and has spent most of her life in the small town of Sierra Madre, well-known as an artists' community. She began painting at the age of twelve when her father, premier California landscape artist Bernard Wynne, began teaching her the art of still life.
"It was an invaluable experience growing up with an accomplished artist for a father. I learned so much simply by observing him at work in his studio and on location. With still life lessons, he taught me early-on the basics of color, form and shape, and the importance of light, reflected light and shadows."
Laura finds motivation for her art in the beauty of nature - the striking effect of light on trees, rocks and water, or an awe-inspiring cloud formation. Driven to capture the moment, she says, "It can be an overwhelming need sometimes, as well as a challenge to capture the feeling that a scene gives me." The feelings are evident in her beautiful pastoral landscapes.
Laura has studied at Pasadena City College and has attended workshops through the Pasadena Center for Fine Arts, American Artist Art Methods and Materials Show and the Los Angeles County Arboretum, with a focus on landscape painting, plein air painting, watercolor botanical illustration and drawing. However, she credits her father for most of her knowledge and inspiration.
Also an avid horse lover, Laura began drawing and painting equine subjects at an early age. Though she now concentrates on landscape painting, an occasional return to equine art gives her a refreshing change of pace.
Living in close proximity to beautiful Santa Anita Racetrack keeps her connected to the horse world, and it is an atmosphere which she loves and which provides her with endless inspiration.
