The month of November is truly a celebration for the gallery as it is our One Year Anniversary and our featured artist
F. Scott Garland. Many of you know Scott and his wife Karen, as the former owners of the business when it was Mountainside Gallery. But did you also know that Scott is an incredibly talented artist? Segil Fine Art is proud and honored to introduce and exhibit the Fine Art of F. Scott Garland.

Another important and exciting facet of this show will be  showcasing of the craftsmanship of Calin Artimescu, the owner and operator of "Corners" frame shop in Old Town Monrovia. Calin and Scott have spent many hours together working hard to select frames that dramatically and uniquely display each of Scott’s paintings.

Meet the Artist - F. Scott Garland

Born and raised in Pasadena California, Scott can remember going to Palm Springs when he was eight years old, his mom setting him down with his sister in front of Sambo’s restaurant, giving them a pad of charcoal paper with pencils, and they would draw for hours. “People would start to gather around us to watch! Both my sister and I always had a knack for drawing.”

Although art came naturally to Scott, it wasn’t until his second year in college that he took his first formal class in art. A pre-med student at the time, he shocked his family when he announced his plan to change his major to art. A year later he was accepted to Art Center College of Design, and graduated with a BFA in Graphics-Packaging. Four years after graduation, in the midst of being engaged and running a graphic design studio, Scott fell from an extension ladder and was paralyzed from the chest down. With the help of what Scott lists as “Faith, Family and Friends,” he worked his way back as a designer, married the woman he calls the “real hero” and never looked back. He has worked for clients that include Toyota, Yamaha, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Lockheed and Time magazine. Scott has taught graphic design at the High School level and for two years directed the Mountainside Fine Art Gallery in Old Town Monrovia.

Scott now enjoys painting full time in his studio at home in Monrovia, and frequently getting away to his “ranch” in Lone Pine, California.

Values in Art; What it Means to Your Collection and Collecting
Three Part Series, Part I; Fine Art Appraisal

Without a doubt, our art is worth something to us; be that of monetary or personal value. The question then arises of whether or not to have your art appraised. John McLosky owns Open Concepts with Linda Strack and helps collectora look at this question in specific terms.

"A connoisseur may see it as fine art. To an owner it may be a source of enjoyment, decoration or investment. However, your insurance company looks at your fine art as personal property," sas John.

In a tragic art loss due to fire, earthquake or the all too recent flood or hurricane, the priceless personal value of the artwork can never be replaced. However, the monetary value can hopefully be used to rebuild your collection.

Following are John McLonsky’s four basic points to help you determine whether or not to have your collection appraised:

NO: If you have a few posters and some other items you know can be replaced easily and affordably or you can do without them if something happens.

MAYBE: If you have art that has been in the family for years and you have absolutely no idea of it’s value. (You might want to have a preliminary assessment done before committing to a formal appraisal.

YES, definitely CONSIDER an appraisal: If you have a combination of fine art, unique decorative items, antiques or a collection of a considerable size.

YES, you ABSOLUTELY need an appraisal: If you know the original value of your personal property based on receipts or solid recollections will exceed the limits of the standard terms and limitations in section "C" of your homeowner’s policy.

These are a few quick points to help you answer a few personal art appraisal questions. For more information on art appraisals, e-mail John McClosky at openconcep@aol.com or call Linda Strack at Whites Gallery, 818-957-4071.
