This Month's Featured Exhibiting Artist

This month I would like to introduce you to the work of William Abell, Cliff Barnes, Donal Jolley and Larry Rolph.

WILLIAM ABELL was raised and educated in Southern California. His love of art, gardens and wilderness were nourished and nurtured at an early age at family hideaways by the sea and in the mountains. Although William is best know for his unique, one-of-a-kind wood sculptures, he is most proud of his monumental sculpture water wall. This abstract piece is constructed of concrete and was completed in 1994. It resides at the City of Glendale Civic Center.

CLIFF BARNES is a born-and-bred Californian. While attending Burbank High School, he received a Disney scholarship to attend the Art Center School of Design. Upon his graduation, Cliff entered the field of architectural illustration. During a year-long trip to Europe, Cliff utilized the training and skills he had acquired to paint various scenes in Italy, Spain and Switzerland. When he returned to the states, he brought the paintings with him, and sold them at various art exhibits and galleries. Later he traveled through Indian reservations and visited rodeos, where he became inspired to paint the American West. No matter whether he is painting the deserts, the rugged mountains, or coastal scenes, the West has become Cliff's favorite subject matter and his full-time passion.

Cliff has been recognized for both his bold use of color and skill in using oils and
watercolor. In addition, his charcoal, or ?conte? drawings have received a number of awards and Gold Medals, and two of his 10? x 8? paintings of California hang in the San Bernardino County Government Museum. Cliff has been listed in the book Contemporary Western Artists and has been written up in Art of the West magazine. His work has also been shown at the Gallery Americana in Carmel, CA; Troy's Gallery in Scottsdale, AZ; John DeMott Gallery in Santa Rosa, CA; and the Burk Gallery in Boulder City, NV.

DONAL JOLLEY was born Zion National Park, Utah, the son of a Park Service Chief Ranger. After graduating from Brigham Young University, Donal relocated to southern California and worked as an illustrator for the Aerospace Corporation in Redondo Beach and San Bernardino for twelve years. He finally left in 1971 to paint full time.

In the 1960's Donal illustrated cartoons and articles for Rod & Custom and Car Craft magazines. He has exhibited in galleries and art shows from Los Angeles to Kansas City, and has had articles in Southwest Art and Art of the West magazines, among others. His 2006 shows also include the annual San Dimas show in April, and the Peppertree Art Show in Santa Ynez in May. Donal lives with his wife, Velma in Rimforest, CA in the San Bernardino Mountains. His studio was built on the second floor of their home. A separate gallery is set aside for paintings of mountain scenes, including Lake Arrowhead and the surrounding forest. Travel to areas of the southwest, old banjos, classic cars and hot rods occupy any spare time he has left after painting.

LARRY ROLPH is a California native, an artist and a contributor to the art world.

Collector's Corner

Why Do Collectors Collect?
Three Part Series
Part One; An Introduction to Why a Collector Collects

I've often said that much of the pleasure in art magazines can be found years later when you are going through your now gigantic stack and deciding what must be thrown away. My Dad actually taught me the fun of going through old magazines as if you were on a treasure hunt. His favorite 'dive spots' are old National Geographics. Once a year the Monterey Public Library gets rid of all of their old magazines and offers them to the public. My Dad is first in line with his Exacto knife!

In the past two years of writing Collector's Corner, I've certainly had the pleasure to draw upon my own experiences to share with you. But it's just as exciting to come across an expert's words in the form of an article, often hidden away for years, only to give to them a new light, a fresh voice and a new audience.

The following insight came from an April 2002 edition of American Artist   magazine from an article written by Gregory J. Peterson entitled, What Motivates a Collector? Wow! What indeed, I?d like to know!

Mr. Peterson, a passionate collector, corporate attorney and the author of The Joy of Art Collecting, begins by telling his readers;

"I've been collection contemporary realist art for more than a decade, and in that time I've come to see collecting as an art form in itself; a highly sophisticated means of self expression responding to profound inner desires and operating, as all art does, on a subconscious level.  Although certain quantifiable factors such as market value, exert a strong influence, I believe the personal message perceived by the collector are ultimately the most persuasive in determining what to acquire.  These attributes contained in the artwork will serve as the collector's medium to form his or her own statement."

Well, this is quite a mouthful, but profoundly true. It's that personal message perceived by the collector that draws us to a work of art, and if that message is strong enough, leads to its purchase. In the next few editions of Collector's Corner we will explore the categories in which Mr. Peterson breaks down his theory and what makes them valuable for both the beginner and the well-seasoned collector. They are:
    • The Artist's Circle
    • Consistency of Style
    • Consistency of Quality
    • Locality
    • Pricing
    • Rarity
    • Meeting the Artist
