Segil Fine Art welcomes in autumn with our "Fall Preview," featuring two unique and fabulous collections of oil paintings by Jeff Ward and wood sculpture by William Abell.

Many of you are familiar with Jeff Ward’s paintings that come alive off the canvas through bold brushstrokes, vivid colors and contrasting lights & shadows. William Abell, a native of Southern California, possesses a fierce love of art gardens and wilderness; all evident through his mystical and magical wood sculptures. William Abell is also the artist who created the monumental water wall located in Glendale Civic Center. Both artist’s share a passion for their natural environmental surroundings and that passion shines through in oil and wood, the combination of which we are proud to share with you in our "Fall Preview."

Meet Artists - Jeff Ward & William Abell

JEFF WARD
Jeff Ward is a talented artist with a powerful understanding of traditional painting. Born in Idaho, Ward gained an early appreciation for art, primarily through the western landscape. Influenced, while in his youth, by the local galleries in Wyoming, and Utah, Jeff’s love of art flourished in relation to his love of the Rocky Mountain outdoors. After studying under renown wildlife artist, Leon Parson, the decision to focus solely on art became an easy one. Ward excelled quickly at Ricks College under Parson and other local Masters, separating himself from his peers through his dedication and work ethic. He soon moved to California after his acceptance into the Art Center College of Design.

Jeff crowned his hard work and effort there by graduating Valedictorian of his class with a record-breaking grade point average. Though involved in freelance illustration as a storyboard artist, Ward has focused his efforts primarily within the California Plein Aire arena. He hopes to share his knowledge, and continue to bring enjoyment to others through the lifelong study of traditional painting. Jeff and his wife Kristine currently reside in Monrovia, California, with their brand new baby son, Isaiah.

WILLIAM ABELL
William Abell was raised and educated in Southern California. His love of art gardens and wilderness were nourished and nurtured at an early age at family hideaways by the sea and in the mountains.

Although Abell is best know for his unique one of a kind wood sculptures, he is most proud of his monumental sculpture water wall. This abstract sculpture water wall is constructed of concrete and was completed in 1994. Abell encourages everyone to visit the wall and make a wish for world peace. The sculpture is located in the Civic Center of the City of Glendale.

Watercolors; Underestimated Treasures

"Transparent watercolor allows for a freshness & luminosity in its washes and for a deft calligraphic brushwork that makes it a most alluring medium."

This statement is one we have always believed in the gallery and truly admire and respect our watercolor artists. Not through a lack of interest, but rather a lack of education, watercolor is sometimes an underestimated medium, often overlooked in the shadow of oils, and this simply should not be the case.

  • Watercolor is not only the oldest known medium to artists but also the most spontaneous.
  • The collector does not need to worry anymore about their watercolors fading as today’s watercolorists use 100% rag paper made with cotton and garuanteed to archival and acid free.
  • From a collector’s standpoint of interest, watercolor is starting to take over many other mediums, including oil, on today’s auction bocks.
