Hot Summer Days & Cool Getaways

If there is anything we can definitely say about the summer of 2006 is that it is HOT!  Although our days are cooling down entering August, I don’t think any of us here in the Golden State will forget our scorching days.  For our loyal gallery fans across the nation and around the world, we thank you for your sympathy!  However, there is an escape from the heat and that’s to the cool space of the gallery.  Not only do we provide a physical respite, but an emotional one.  Our current exhibit (through the end of August) of Keewon Hong, Brenda Swenson and Laura Wynne depicts oils and watercolors of shady Monrovia Canyon Creek paths, beachside hideaways and private spots of escape under a Jacaranda at the Arboretum in Arcadia.  Don’t miss this exhibit!  Not only for you health, but your summer mental sanity!

On Saturday, August 19th, join us for an enjoyable, informative and entertaining afternoon with a watercolor demonstration with Brenda Swenson. Observe the intimacy of the medium and the way it encourages inventiveness that seems to record the artist's fleeting thoughts on paper. We’ll have time for an open forum discussion about this most unpredictable, alluring and luminescent of mediums.  Come early and view Brenda Swenson’s current work at the gallery and enjoy light refreshments with us. Please RSVP for this free event by August 16th, 2006

This Month's Featured Exhibiting Artist

This month I would like to introduce you to the work of Laura Wynne.

LAURA WYNNE
Laura finds motivation for her art in the beauty of nature – the striking effect of light on trees, rocks and water, or an awe-inspiring cloud formation. Driven to capture the moment, she says, “It can be an overwhelming need sometimes, as well as a challenge to capture the feeling.” The feelings are evident in her beautiful pastoral landscapes. Laura has studied at Pasadena Center for Fine Arts, Pasadena City College, and Los Angeles County Arboretum, with a focus on landscape painting, plein air painting, watercolor botanical illustrationand drawing. A lifelong resident of Sierra Madre, she has also had extensive private study since age 12 with her father, premier California landscape artist Bernard Wynne. She has worked in graphic arts at Santa Anita Racetrack since 1998, and only in the last few years have her family obligations allowed her to realize her dreams of painting and exploring her marvelous potential.

Laura is a member of Oil Painters of America, California Art Club, San Gabriel Fine Arts Association, Pasadena Center for Fine Arts, and Fine Artists Factory.

Four Part Series; Art in L.A., a Cultural Expedition into Our Own Back Yard
Series Finale: Exploring LA’s Art Through the Eyes of a Foreigner

Last month, I had the good fortune to spend some time in Paris.  The main purpose for my trip was to see the Pompidou Center’s exhibit, Los Angeles 1955-1985 - Birth of An Artistic Capital.  The title alone gives the show, and its city of origin, a certain amount of respect.  My aim was not so much the context of the exhibit, but how it was presented to the world from the point of view of a foreigner.  And by the French, who some would argue, have not had the greatest respect for American art.  However, what I found was quite fascinating.

If you’ve not been to the Pompidou Center before, visit www.centrepompidou.fr and simply have a look at the building.  It speaks of innovation, inspiration and of artistic and cultural concepts beyond our time.  As does the LA exhibit. Much of the show was video and conceptual art aimed at shock value and influenced by our culture’s industry, entertainment.  This kind of an exhibit needed room, volume and a huge amount of space to be displayed and appreciated.  The Pompidou did that.  The exhibit was sprawling, but well organized and very well laid out, giving the public time and lot’s of room to take in each (and often times very a disturbing) exhibit. Finally, the show was housed on the top floor of the center.  Taking the glass-housed tube escalator ride up was breathtaking, but emerging from the exhibit itself for the ride down was the real treat.  One could only stand and stare out at Paris (literally) laid out before you at your feet.  That was amazing.

Gallery Acquisitions

Segil Fine Art has a new program with the goal of providing our collectors with fine art by wonderful artists who are not necessarily represented by the gallery. We purchase or acquire works from artists, estates, or others private collectors.

"Palm Desert" (20x24, oil, $2900) by Frank Serrano is one of the works available. The painting was purchased from the California Art Club’s prestigious 2004 Gold Medal Show in Pasadena, CA.

We’d also like to introduce a new artist from Hungary, Janos Korognai. We have a wonderful collection of ten of his paintings, each of which will be presented weekly via email and available to purchase only at that time.  All paintings in the collection are 6x8, $350 and framed.
