Meet Artists - Carole Cooke, Frank Serrano & W. Jason Situ CAROLE COOKEKnown for her evocative plein air landscapes, Colorado artist Carole Cooke relates, "When I paint on location in remote areas, I feel a sense of unparalleled exhilaration and joy. It is my hope that sharing images of these pristine vistas will not only help my viewers experience a strong connection to nature, but more importantly will encourage them to join in efforts to preserve these vanishing treasures." Following a successful career as an art director in the film industry, in 1997, Cooke turned her talents to the field of fine art. Following her own path of discovery, she found inspiration in the work of the Early California Impressionists and the Taos Masters. A California native, Frank Serrano was a successful commercial artist before deciding to pursue his passion for fine art painting in the early 1990s. Since then, he has participated in numerous exhibitions, including the California Art Club Gold Medal Exhibit. He also conducts workshops on location and in his studio. Frank travels throughout the western states, painting scenes that range from the desert southwest to the beautiful high country vistas of the Sierras. Although the majority of Frank’s work is done on location, he also paints in his studio, creating larger pieces from his finished on-site sketches. Largely self taught as an oil painter, Frank was initially inspired by such artists as Edgar Payne, Sam Hyde Harris, Carl Rungius, and Emile Gruppe, but he also admires several contemporaries. W. Jason Situ was born in 1949 in Guang Dong, China. After beginning painting in high school during China’s “Cultural Revolution,” he completed his art education at the Guangzhou Fine Arts Institute, one of China’s most prestigious and competitive art academies. In 1989, Situ immigrated to the United States with his family. He was fascinated by the beautiful California landscape and has been a full-time plein air artist since 1997. Mr. Situ has won numerous awards for his artwork including the “Award of Excellence,” Oil Painters of America 13th Annual National Juried Show, “Artist’s Choice Award,” La Quinta Plein Air Juried Competition, and “Best in Show-National Award of Excellence,” Oil painters of America 10th Annual National Juried Show. He has also been featured in several fine art publication including Art of the West, Southwest Art and American Artist. "Please join us for the opening reception Saturday, August 6 from 5-8pm." - Laura

Collecting Contemporaries How often do we here the phrase "his/her work will be worth a fortune when they're…" (well, no longer with us!) We want to dispel that morbid notion by bringing focus back to the incredibly talented and prolific contemporary artists working today. (Contemporary does not mean "modern art" but refers to an artist who is living and working in the present tense.)
Simply put, collecting contemporary artist is fun! We can become personally involved in the evolution of our collections and perhaps even make a new friend in an artist in the process. Next Month’s Issue of Collector’s Corner
