Meet Artist Artists Don Munz and Felicé Hrovat

DON MUNZ became involved in art at age 34. Although some might consider this to be a bit late in life to start pursuing an art career, Don finds it exciting. After graduating Art Center College of Design, Don freelanced in graphic design and taught in the Art Department at Pasadena City College for ten years.

In 1978, a move to the San Bernadino Mountains began a period of printmaking (serigraphy) for Don and, over the next 13 years, he sold over 100 editions that were designed and printed in his Running Springs studio. In order to “seek a more immediate medium to express his art,” Don began oil painting as an extension of the oil based inks used in his screen printing.

Influenced by the early California Impressionists and the craftsman era, he began painting the Southern California landscape. “The San Gabriel mountains and canyons have always been a special place to me and I can see why many of the early plein air painters painted and settled in the Pasadena and San Gabriel valley area.”

Don searches for motifs that reflect a place and a feeling that he hopes to share with the viewer. "Having grown up in Northern California, I spent many summers in the Santa Cruz and Soquel areas (my Grandmother had a cabin there) and fell in love with the central coast. I love the ocean view through stands of slender eucalyptus and mighty oaks."

Don and his wife now reside in rural Canada. Still very much a frontier environment, they love the openness and uninhabited rivers and lakes of that country to the north. They live on 2 picturesque acres, a stones throw from the Rideau River, forty miles from Ottawa.

The Munz’ may have moved to Canada but they left their hearts in the “Golden State.” They have family in California and travel there each year to visit loved ones and to sketch and photograph “that still beautiful state.”

“To sum it all up, I think one of the main focuses of my painting is to share an image that brings back a memory or provokes an emotion.”

FELICÉ HROVAT's interest in art started as a teenager in his native town of Trieste, Italy. His vision of becoming a competent artist has always been a part of himself. He worked as a commercial artist for over thirty years in Montreal, Canada, and in California. Since his retirement in 1991, Felicé has dedicated most of his time learning and experimenting with color and developing his own painting style.

Felicé is one of the artist demonstrators at the annual Southland Art Association Festival of Art Show and has been conducting oil painting workshops at Taylor Ranch in Montebello since 1993. His work has won “Best of Show” in several competitions including the San Gabriel Fine Arts Fall Show, the Annual Art Festival in Montebello, and the Wilshire Square’s Annual Art Street Festival in Santa Ana.

"Please join us for Felicé Hrovat’s opening reception Saturday, June 11, 5-8pm and Don Munz’s reception Saturday, June 25, 5-8pm."   - Laura

Taking the Intimidation Out of Buying Art: Part II
Fine Art Prints

Today’s technology has taken fine art prints to an entirely new level. It’s often difficult to tell a print from the original work of art, whether it’s on canvas or watercolor paper. Fine Artists such as Cody DeLong, Andrea Dern, Trish Kertes and Lou Police (to name a few!) produce giclée prints on canvas and watercolor paper that truly rival their original "parents." Prints are another great way to get to know an artists and their work.

  • Prints are an affordable introduction to an artists you are interested in collecting.
  • Prints can be custom made on a specific surface and to a specific size.
  • Artist’s signed prints are an investment that will escalate in value over time.

Today’s fine art technology has made it possible for anyone to own a true work of art in a print. We will be happy to have our artists sign your prints for you, or produce a custom size that is specific to your space. www.SegilFineArt.com
