This Month's Featured Exhibiting Artist

This month I would like to introduce you to the work of Keewon Hong.  In July and August, we’ll be meeting Brenda Swenson and Laura Wynne

KEEWON HONG
Born in South Korea, Keewon immigrated to America in 1983. He is a self-taught artist who has been working in the Los Angeles area producing murals, fine art painting, and portraiture for the past fifteen years. His work is influenced by artists such as Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Corrot and Inness. He strives to emphasize the feelings of beauty and thought of each person portrayed in his figure paintings and the quiet, intimate, and sublime stillness of nature in his landscape work.

His goal is to provide an emotional experience to the viewer who might, in return, have insightful reflections and beautiful thoughts of their own. Keewon’s hope is that he will continue to develop his personal style of painting as he celebrates both nature and humanity by exploring their cyclical relationship.

Part Three: Exploring LA’s Art Through the Eyes of a Collector

By now you have strolled through the art walks, spent pleasurable hours in L.A.’s museums and have caught the art bug and are ready to buy art!  That’s where galleries come in.  Purchasing art should be fun, convenient and stress free.  Whatever type of art you are in the market for, there is sure to be a gallery in your area to fit the bill.  Here are a few tips to help your gallery experiences be the best possible.
  • Never be intimidated.  You are the client and potential customer.  Take your time, browse, ask questions, and most importantly, enjoy yourself!
  • If you discover an artist who’s style you really like, but don’t see a particular painting that you love, ask the gallery director if they have anything else by that artist, perhaps in the back room, on their website or at the artist’s studio.
  • The more information you can give a gallery director, the better chance they have to match you with the perfect painting.  Don't be afraid to tell them what you are looking for in regards to style, subject matter, size medium and artist.  While writing this section, I had a very nice woman come in to admire the work of a particular artist. However, she was looking for a painting with eucalyptus and orange trees.  Although we don’t have a painting of that particular subject, I told her that the artist would be happy to do a commission.  She was thrilled!
Art galleries are your retail destination to buy art.  The goal of the gallery is to find wonderful homes for all of the artwork they carry!

Of the hundreds of galleries in Los Angeles, here are a handful of suggestions in the foothill corridor.  You can also “google” art galleries in L.A. or specifically your area.

Monrovia: Segil Fine Art, Jaffin Gallery, Oh My Goddard Gallery
Pasadena: Tirage, Gallery Gabrie, Michael Hollis, Mendenhall Gallery, American Legacy of Fine Arts, Fine Artists Factory
Altadena: The Underground Arts Society
Arcadia: Mellon Gallery

Lynne Fearman
“Most of my life has been spent painting in watercolors. They travel well and I delight in the immediacy of them. In recent years, I've been drawn to paint in oils, exploring the textures oils can create. Acrylic paint is also a favorite medium, because of its versatility. I enjoy putting my own spin on a landscape, changing the light to enhance the subject.”

Felicé Hrovat
Felicé Hrovat’s interest in art started as a teenager in his native town of Trieste, Italy. His vision of becoming a competent artist has always been a part of himself. He worked as a commercial artist for over thirty years in Montreal, Canada, and in California. He is one of the artist demonstrators at the annual Southland Art Association Festival of Art Shows and has been conducting oil painting workshops at Taylor Ranch in Montebello since 1993.  Felicé is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades for his artwork.
