This Month's Feature

This month I would like to introduce you to the work of Trish Kertes.

TRISH KERTES, of La Canada Flintridge, began her painting career with art classes in life drawing at Barnsdall Art Center.  Over the last twenty-five years her love of art has included painting in watercolor, pastel and oils.  Currently she paints in oils, often, in “plein air.”

As a plein air painter (painting in the open air), Trish selects the elements of an alluring nature scene that best express the mood she wants to convey.  Nature provides the raw materials for this artist’s design on canvas.  She must work quickly outside to capture the ever-changing effects of light.  It is this creative process that Trish finds most rewarding and challenging.  She will often use her plein air works as a plan for larger paintings done in her studio.  Creating a still life work involves designing an “interior landscape.”  Trish uses flowers from her garden, objects she collects, as well as family heirlooms to create her sensitive still life paintings.  Her colorful painting style recalls the Impressionist painters and the works of early California artists.

Verdugo Hills Art Association honored Trish as “Artist of the Year” in 1998.  She is also a member of the California Art Club and the Oil Painters of America.  Her paintings have won numerous prizes and are sold locally.  Trish also exhibits annually at Descanso Gardens in the Boddy House Art Gallery during the month of September.

Four Part Series; Art in L.A., a Cultural Expedition into Our Own Back Yard
Part Two: Exploring LA’s Art Through the Eyes of a Casual Connoisseur

"The fine arts have always provided the venue for man's highest spiritual strivings in the secular realm.  From as far back as the time of the ancient Greek sculptor Phidias, it has been the roll of the arts to realize, in physical media, the ideals of what man could and should be.  Art sets down a distilled expression of the human spirit, one that's tangible in form an accessible to all."
David R. Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D.
Power vs. Force

In this series, we are exploring L.A.'s rich and varied art culture through all that is readily available and accessible to us in the way of fine art venues.  Last month we looked at the activity of art exploration through the many wonderful L.A. art walks.  In this edition we'll move upward into the realm of a connoisseur, (though casual at that as it's all about having fun!) and look at two venues in high concentration here in Los Angeles; art education programs and museums.

L.A. boasts the largest amount of art education programs in the world.  All of these institutions have student galleries and most are open to the public.  What amazing places to see the up and coming artists of tomorrow!  From a student gallery, take a trip to one of Los Angeles' many incredible museums.  For a fun afternoon in the in the Pasadena area, Art Center College of design has been a leader in art and design education for nearly 75 years and is a fertile artistic enclave which not only concentrates on fine art, but also film, industrial design and illustration programs, just to name a few.  Five minutes down the hill is the Norton Simon Museum which houses one of the countries finest collections of European, American and Asian art.  So go ahead, and take advantage of what our incredible city has to offer in arts and artistic academic culture!

One of the best websites I've found for artistic academic and museum listings in Los Angeles and surrounding counties is artscenecal.com - click on “listings.”
