This Month's Featured Exhibiting Artist

This month I would like to further introduce you to the work of Trish Kertes with insights into her artwork, by the artist herself.

What artist inspires you the most? Why?
I am inspired by many of the Early California Plein Air painters and study their work frequently.  My favorite painter, though, is Sam Hyde Harris. I study his use of light, composition, and bold strokes of color. He was an accomplished commercial artist, but also devoted himself to painting our local area.  He lived in La Canada, as I do, built his own home, grew his own food and kept a cow for milk.  He had amazing creative energy and spirit - no task was too daunting for him.  He was married and raised his family in concert with creating and selling his art.  His accomplishments encourage me to reach farther and approach painting with freedom.

How do you start your painting compositions?
There are many ways to begin a painting, and I use various methods depending on the subject and whether I am outdoors or in my studio.  The main principles that are important to me, though, are to decide on the focal point placement, create darkest darks, lightest lights, and choose a color palette that suits the subject matter.  I draw in the subject with some loose lines, often in a bright color that may then peek through the final painting.  Then the fun begins!

What is your favorite subject in landscape?
I love painting water, especially sloughs. I seek out sloughs that are inland fingers of water from the ocean.  Their shallow waters offer fabulous reflections and are also beautiful in misty weather. Landscapes that have sienna and ochre colored grasses on hillsides studded with oaks always get my eye excited.  I also love painting flower fields-especially California and European poppies.

Collector's Corner
Values in Art;
Fine Art Appraisal

Without a doubt, our art is worth something to us; be that of monetary or personal value. The question then arises of whether or not to have your art appraised. John McLosky owns Open Concepts with Linda Strack and helps collectora look at this question in specific terms.

"A connoisseur may see it as fine art. To an owner it may be a source of enjoyment, decoration or investment. However, your insurance company looks at your fine art as personal property," sas John.

In a tragic art loss due to fire, earthquake or the all too recent flood or hurricane, the priceless personal value of the artwork can never be replaced. However, the monetary value can hopefully be used to rebuild your collection.

Following are John McLonsky’s four basic points to help you determine whether or not to have your collection appraised:
  • NO: If you have a few posters and some other items you know can be replaced easily and affordably or you can do without them if something happens.

  • MAYBE: If you have art that has been in the family for years and you have absolutely no idea of it’s value. (You might want to have a preliminary assessment done before committing to a formal appraisal.

  • YES, definitely CONSIDER an appraisal: If you have a combination of fine art, unique decorative items, antiques or a collection of a considerable size.

  • YES, you ABSOLUTELY need an appraisal: If you know the original value of your personal property based on receipts or solid recollections will exceed the limits of the standard terms and limitations in section "C" of your homeowner’s policy.
These are a few quick points to help you answer a few personal art appraisal questions. For more information on art appraisals, e-mail John McClosky at openconcep@aol.com or call Linda Strack of Whites Gallery, 818-957-4071.
