This Month's  Feature

This month I would like to introduce you to the work of Linda Brown and next month we will be meeting Trish Kertes.

“This world is full of beauty, from grand mountain vistas to butterfly wings. Painting such beauty is a joy I just couldn’t live without. When others look at my paintings, and feel that same sense of joy and beauty, I am deeply grateful for having been able to share the experience!”

LINDA BROWN, a Southern California native, has been painting all her life. (Well, ok, not all her life, but since the age of 3 anyway) While in high school she was introduced to oil paints and has been passionate about it ever since. For about 25 years her specialty had been commissioned portraiture. These were executed in the academic style of the old Italian masters, employing the techniques of verdaccio and glazing, and using simple interior or studio backgrounds to allow the subject center stage.

Being an unashamed “nature lover,” when she was offered a commission that involved a significant outdoor landscape as a background, she jumped at the chance. That whet her appetite for more and she decided to elaborate on her portraits more often by setting the subject in the outdoors. Studying great landscape art of the past and present, she found herself especially drawn to the beautiful light and color found most often in the plein air works of early California artists such as: Edgar Payne, Maurice Braun, Guy Rose, and Elmer & Marion Wachtel. Seeking further growth, she has studied with several contemporary masters such as Ralph Oberg, Matt Smith, and Skip Whitcomb.

Soon the outdoor work became her main focus and all but overtook her portrait work. Her pure landscapes have an entirely different style than her portrait and still life work They are much more loose and painterly, with emphasis on the effects of light and atmosphere, and a sense of time and place, rather than on the fine detail and realism found in her studio paintings. In both cases, however, her main goal is to capture the “spirit” of the subject she is painting.

Linda’s award winning art has been accepted into many juried exhibits, and her first solo exhibition of landscapes was a sold out success. Her paintings hang in private collections throughout the western U.S., as well as Canada and Great Britain. She makes her home in the foothill community of Claremont California, and is a member of the California Art Club and the Oil Painters of America.

Four Part Series; Art in L.A., a Cultural Expedition into Our Own Back Yard
Part One: Exploring L.A.’s Art Through the Eyes of the Weekend Warrior

The artistic and cultural history of Los Angeles is rich, varied, and has served to create one of the most dynamic artistic landscapes in the world today. During WWII, European intellectuals flocked to Los Angeles, bringing with them the wealth of their own culture as well as new ideas which would mingle and flourish in their new and inspiring environment. Our international art contemporaries are now looking towards L.A., and its artistic impact, as an important presence on the world’s cultural stage. Currently in Paris, the Pompidou Center is hosting "Los Angeles 1955-1985: Birth of an Artistic Capital" which highlights 30 years of Los Angeles art, and will run well into July 2006. (We will be exploring this exciting phenomenon in part four of our series!)

Watching the world watch L.A. gives us Angelenos an opportunity, if not a great excuse, to explore with our own eyes what is so prevalent right in our back yard; fabulous art.

Recently, a friend sent out an email inviting us all to participate in the upcoming downtown L.A. Art Walk, and what a fun way to kick off this series but to explore the art in our backyard as a Weekend Warrior! Let’s take a look at just a few of the many Art Walks which Los Angeles has to offer.

WHITES GALLERY
It is with great sadness that we bring you news of the closing of a long-standing art institution in our community. Whites Gallery will be closing their doors after 62 years of service to the arts in Montrose and surrounding areas. Whites Framing and Restoration, owned and operated by Miguel Perez, will continue to serve your framing and restoration needs. Linda Strack, the owner of Whites Gallery, will continue to serve in the arts by operating an online gallery. Whites and Segil Fine Art have worked together closely in the past on many projects and will joyfully continue to do so in the future.

“Please continue to support the arts in our local area! If you have the opportunity to visit a gallery locally, do so. If you have the desire to purchase original art, do that too! The artists within a culture have always been an indication that the culture is healthy. In the absence of free artistic expression, we net a very sick society. Without patrons, the artists have a very rough “row to hoe”. Without galleries, whether they are virtual or real, the artists have an even tougher time. With consumer support, all of this remains viable and active.”
Linda Strack
