Segil Fine Art is proud to introduce our newly remodeled
gallery space and just in time for our first show of 2007 featuring Claudia
Michelle Betty and Jay Ewing. We’ve
worked hard for the past five weeks to expand our wall space in order to
continually offer our clients a full range of artwork.
Please join us at the gallery for our Winter Group Show through March 24. You can also check out the exhibit online on our website.

This month I would like to introduce you to the work of Michael Alten.
Born and raised here in Southern California, Michael has had a deep love for representational art his whole life. Largely self-taught, he developed his drawing talents mostly without guidance until he sought to learn to paint in community college and was discouraged at the lack of instruction there. Many years went by before he dared to try again, and by fortunate circumstance, he found a fiery 83 year old lady who taught some of the basic principles missing from most art institutions. Over the years, he continued to develop his skills and has sold many works on private commission. Michael has had featured works published by Monarch Publishing Co. and is a member of the Monrovia Arts Festival Association. He is currently an instructor with the world's largest fine art instruction program - Mission: Renaissance.Michael feels privileged to be part of the resurgent interest in fine representational art, and strives to create with painterly realism and vibrant color.

Digital Art Marketing; Collecting Art from Your Computer In this digital age, it’s no wonder that a key marketing factor in a visual business such as art is advertising and selling art over the internet and by email. All of you are familiar with this practice as Segil Fine Art is proud of our email marketing, keeping our clients up-to-date on the latest works available for purchase. While viewing a piece of artwork is a convenient tool for informing local clients about artwork that they can view in the gallery, it also serves as a viable collecting tool for those clients who live out of state. Online marketing of artwork has become such a force in the selling of art, that galleries across the country have reported sell-outs of shows before they even open and artwork in the six-figure range selling by digital image alone.
Although the artwork that we carry is not in the six figures, we still understand that buying a $200 painting online can be a bit frightening for collectors and potential collectors. In this section, we will point out a few pros and cons to buying artwork online and lend a few suggestions to help your decision making process and make purchasing as safe as possible.
PROS:
Convenience The most compelling argument to buying art online is the convenience. National and international buyers can collect their favorite artist’s latest work without having to travel to the gallery to see the work.
Collector Competition Many galleries, including Segil Fine Art, offer their clients an exclusive online view of new artwork, and upcoming exhibits, before the paintings are on exhibit to the general public.
CONS: Color Quality Color can, and does, vary depending on an individual’s computer monitor and its settings. Certain colors may be more dominant in a digital image than in the original painting.
Loss of Detail “The image representing the work of art could be, however subtly, misrepresenting it.” (Jori Finkel, "You’ve Seen the Email, Now Buy the Art", NyTimes.com, 2007). The compression of an image in email format inevitably causes some loss of information including texture, brushstroke detail and (more prevelant in secondary art sales) the condition of the painting.

This month I would like to introduce you to the work of David Darrow.
DAVID DARROW David is an observer. He loves a good sunset, aqua waves, a lonely but flamboyant flower pot, an immeasurably gray day, the inquisitive expression on a child's face, the way light and shadow bring out the intricacies and uniqueness of the human form. He believes he is in this world to reproduce beauty as he sees it -- as an echo of Creation. His experience as an illustrator taught him t o observe, define, simplify and enhance, in order to communicate visually what impacts his emotions through his eyes, to let the viewer see what he sees. "I marvel not only that there is such beauty in this world, but equally that we have been granted the internal appreciation of it," David muses. A California Native all his life, David's formal training was at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA where he earned a BFA with Honors in Illustration, graduating in 1980. He later returned to teach advanced courses in illistration at Art Center and at San Diego State University. He has won multiple awards as an illustrator, and in virtually every competition in which he has entered his fine art.
