Happy New Year!  Wishing you and yours a prosperous and happy 2007 from everyone here at Segil Fine Art gallery.

Last month we celebrated our Fourth Annual Small Works Show with over 60 new pieces of art in the gallery.  Many thanks to all of the artists who participated in this annual event and we are already looking forward to next year.

Our big news for the New Year is the remodeling of the gallery.  We will be closing our doors on January 9th for a few weeks for a New Year’s makeover!  The gallery will be open by appointment and if there are any paintings from our website that you would like to see in person, simply call us and we’ll arrange a private viewing.  We’ll be keeping you posted on new works in the gallery by email and on our opening date.

This Month's Featured Artist

Although there isn’t a physical show at the gallery this month, I would like to introduce you to the work of Claudia Michelle Betty who will be part of a group show in March.

CLAUDIA MICHELLE BETTY
Claudia Michelle Betty’s exposure to art began at an early age with her family’s art gallery in Sea Cliff, New York. Her training continued at the San Francisco Art Institute, where she received a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree and at Art Center College of Design where she has been a full-time faculty member since 1994.

Ms. Betty began painting in the plein-air technique under the tutelage of Art Center instructors Mike Hernandez and Richard Lees. Working at Art Center, Claudia is surrounded by the art and design world, so there are many historical and contemporary painters that have influenced her work. She especially finds inspiration form Sam Hyde Harris, one of the early Los Angeles area artists, and his mastery of atmospheric perspective.

"Since moving from a beach community, to the hills above Los Angeles, I’ve been painting urban landscapes; everything from the LA River to Chavez Ravine. There is a wonderful amount of atmospheric perspective to capture, so I find painting the urban landscape challenging and rewarding," Claudia says.

Ms. Betty has painted in various plein-air events including the Huntington Library & Botanical Gardens Invitational, the Jardins en Plein Air Invitational at Descanso Gardens and the La Quinta Invitational. She is a member of the California Art Club and her work has been chosen to be exhibited at the California Art Club Gallery at the Old Mill and the Women’s City Club of Pasadena, California Art Club Venues. She’s also a member of the Laguna Plein Air Painter’s Association You can see her work in an upcoming group show here at the gallery in early 2007.

Collector's Corner
Art Fairs/Art Shows;
What They Mean to the Collector

In early December, I attended the Art Basel International Art Show in Miami Beach in conjunction with a three day seminar on the role of art fairs and art shows in today's art market hosted by Sotheby's.

This extraordinary event began five years ago and is an offshoot of one of the largest art fairs in the world, Art Basel, in Basel Switzerland.  The entire city of South Beach took part in some shape or form, however the main event was held at the Miami Beach convention center, which housed the exhibitions of 200 galleries from North and Latin America, Asia, Europe and South Africa.  Over 1500 emerging and established “cutting edge” contemporary artists were represented.  It was truly an adventure, a feast for the eyes and an opportunity to have a first hand look at who the most current artists in the market are and the trends that they are creating.

There are literally hundreds of art fairs and art shows going on annually all over the world, catering to all types of fine and decorative arts.  In fact the next big new one for contemporary art will be held in Dubai in March 2007.  Here, I might note that the fairs and shows I am talking about are not the local ones found in cities or towns which are open to individual exhibiting artists.  These are trade fairs and are exclusive to galleries and dealers in the arts and are “vetted,” adhering to a strict code of entry, judging and conduct.

So what does an art fair or an art show mean to a collector?
  • As mentioned above, art fairs and shows are the best opportunity to have a first hand look, in one setting and over a short period of time, usually a few days, at who the most current artists in the market are and the trends that they are creating.

  • The fairs and shows are “vetted,” meaning an expert committee rigorously examines and appraises all entries into the show.  This assures the buying public of the authenticity of the participants.

  • Art fairs and shows are costly to the galleries and dealers participating.  There are entry fees, booth fees, travel, staff and a myriad of other costs involved.  The vendors have made a huge investment in their participation and are after a serious return on that investment.  Therefore what you see in their exhibits are the best of their inventory.
International art fairs and shows are typically known to attract the big-time buying collectors and it was actually noted that when Art Basel opened its doors at noon on December 7th, there was literally a run to the best exhibits.  This, however, does not rule out the smaller collectors, as there is plenty to be had for everyone!

For an exciting local event and a great introduction to professional art shows and fairs in general, the 12th Annual LA Art Show will be held at the Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, January 24-28.
